Michael
Clack
Michael
Clack first learned a brass instrument as a child at
the local Salvation Army where his father was
bandmaster. Piano tuition was followed by the organ
before moving on to study at the London College of
Music (GLCM, Hon FLCM) and London University where he
gained a B. Mus. (Hons) degree.
Of his interest in the trombone repertory he says...
'As part of my work in higher education I found that many
pieces designated as trombone solos were originally written
for other instruments like flute, oboe, bassoon – even
cello. My search for original trombone works led me to the
small repertory for alto trombone. We hardly ever heard
those pieces played and very few students owned an alto
trombone. The opportunity to transcribe some of these works
for tenor trombone seemed a practical way to enhance the
tenor trombone literature with genuine, if little-known,
trombone music. Although it is a small canon, Winwood Music
have splendidly made it better known.'
Michael Clack was awarded the MBE for his services to music
in education.
